James Fergus Almy was the founder of Almy, Bigelow, and Washburn, dry goods store in Salem, MA. "Three years before the first shot was fired at Fort Sumter, in 1858, James Fergus Almy, a Salem, Massachusetts businessman started a new store. The same business grew to thirteen Almys' stores, part of a 30 department store group."
