The fiftieth anniversary of the marriage of Samuel H. and Julia E. Almy was pleasantly celebrated on the Seventeenth day of the second (as the Friends say), at the house of their son, James F. Almy, Esq. They repeated their marriage vows in a Quaker marriage ceremony.
The obituary which appeared in the newspapers a few year later stated that Samuel Holder Almy was born in Newport, R.I., April 13, 1812, of Quaker parentage. When a boy his parents removed to Vermont, where he lived for years. He was educated in the Friends school in Providence, R.I. He returned to Vermont soon after his graduation and taught school for several terms in towns in that state, afterward in Adams, Mass. For many years, Samuel was engaged in cotton and woolen manufacture at Adams and North Adams, and in 1873 came to Salem and was for a time associated with his son in the dry goods business.
