Following is the continuation from the last Newsletter of the journal of Billings Grinnell Almy. (See introduction in Newsletter No. 85, January 1996.)
Through to the S.W. part of city. Chase pointing out book-stores, barber shop, hatter etc. Visited the University library. Struck with its beauty and perfect arrangement. Bought me a real German hat and left my old one to be reformed. In the afternoon beat Chase Tilton and JEA two games of dominoes and then went up the street sight seeing. Ended by buying 10.00 marks worth of note and writing paper etc.
Wrote a letter to FFA in the morning then began to clean up wheel. Left off to go down street until noon. J changed his sprocket wheel and chains at bicycle shop mean while and bought a pocket-book. After dinner 3 games of dominoes divided equally. Then til night on the sheels. Post Karte to Ada.
Began my work on German. Read Wundt and my grammar. About 11:00 went down to Picture Gallery for an hour. In afternoon went out on wheel rode in a park to S.W. of the city. Called on a Mr. Havens who came over on same boat with JEA 77 year for first time, some difference. First "pickaninny coon" forfeit but not the last.
Forenoon on German. Reading out loud, and J reading to me. Took another walk before dinner. Standing joke to go shopping twice a day. Bought me a German tie. In afternoon few games of dominoes, more German and more shopping. Located book stores.
German, I guess yes, aber nicht besser.* Goes very slowly. Sometimes think I am picking it up again, doubt whether I can see any improvement. This morning I bought my first book Prof. H.K. Wolfe's "Thesis", also spent some more money for a watch. Ran out to the Napoleon Monument just as it was getting dusky. Rainy wheels quite muccy on return trip.
* Transcriber's note: but not better.
German all forenoon, didn't stop for shopping trip. Dominoes until 5:00 in afternoon. Then went to get a book ordered. In the evening, after supper, we stayed in the dining room. Great jokes for the Germans, fun to watch people laugh even when one can't see the joke. Fraulein's Schwester who "must talk fast because she has lots to unroll", and is only going to stay three days. Can see an improvement in understanding. Toothpick puzzles, Napkin "jumpers", Up Jenkins etc.
Wrote letters all day and evening except for making out a time table of Univ. Studies. Went to church also. Wrote to FEA, OAR, Ella Grinnell Seabury, Ada. Cloudy day, little cold.
